Software Engineer
About Blackwall
Blackwall is an AI-enabled cybersecurity and web infrastructure company building the next generation of web traffic management technology.
Following our recent $100 million Series C funding round at a $2.2 billion valuation, we're accelerating our global expansion and developing technology that transforms how internet traffic is managed and secured.
Our flagship product, GateKeeper, protects over 2.3 million websites and applications through more than 100 hosting and service partners worldwide. As AI agents and automated systems reshape the internet, we're building the infrastructure to manage this increasingly complex environment.
About the Role
We're looking for an experienced, curious, and versatile Software Engineer to help develop and evolve Blackwall's web infrastructure and security technology.
We're not looking for expertise in a particular programming language. We're looking for engineers who understand how the internet works, enjoy solving complex technical problems, and genuinely love building software.
You might have developed networking software, contributed to open-source infrastructure projects, built web scraping or automation systems, or worked on security and fraud prevention technologies. What matters most is your relevant engineering experience, technical judgement, and ability to apply your knowledge to new challenges.
We embrace AI-assisted development and value engineers who can use modern tools effectively while bringing the creativity, technical depth, and problem-solving skills needed to build sophisticated systems.
Role Details
Reports to: VP of Engineering
Location: Remote, within Europe
Engagement: Employment options in the UK, Spain, Germany, and Estonia; contractor arrangements elsewhere
Compensation: Based on experience and location
What You'll Be Doing
Design, develop, and optimize high-performance software for web traffic management, security, and automated threat mitigation.
Build and improve components of our web infrastructure, traffic processing, and bot detection systems.
Investigate automated threats, including scraping, crawlers, credential stuffing, and abusive automation, to develop effective defensive solutions.
Work with web servers, networking technologies, and open-source infrastructure, extending existing components where needed.
Explore new technologies, experiment with solutions, and use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate engineering work.
Contribute to technical architecture, challenge existing approaches, and take ownership of solutions through to production.
What We're Looking For
Strong software engineering experience, ideally in web infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, internet automation, or related technical domains.
Solid understanding of internet technologies, including HTTP, web servers, networking, and web application infrastructure.
Experience building complex, scalable, or performance-sensitive software systems.
Ability to work across programming languages and technologies rather than being dependent on a particular stack.
Genuine technical curiosity, demonstrated through professional work, open-source contributions, personal projects, or independent experimentation.
Strong problem-solving skills, independent thinking, and a willingness to challenge assumptions.
Ability to use AI development tools effectively while maintaining sound engineering judgement.
Experience in any of the following areas would be particularly valuable:
Web servers and reverse proxies, including Nginx and Apache.
Bot mitigation, web security, fraud prevention, or anti-abuse technologies.
Web scraping, crawling, browser automation, or automated traffic systems.
Open-source infrastructure development or contributions to relevant projects.
High-performance networking, traffic processing, or distributed systems.
We value depth of experience in relevant technologies over familiarity with a long list of programming languages. You don't need to have worked with our exact stack to succeed here.
Our Tech Stack
C++, Go, PHP, Nginx, Apache, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, RabbitMQ, Kubernetes, Docker, GitLab CI/CD, and Linux.
Our stack continues to evolve, and experience with these specific technologies is not a prerequisite.
Why Join Blackwall?
Build technology for the next generation of the internet, addressing emerging challenges in cybersecurity, automation, and AI-driven traffic.
Join at a defining stage of growth, following our $100 million Series C and expansion into new markets and technologies.
Make a meaningful technical impact, contributing ideas and shaping solutions rather than simply implementing specifications.
Work with experienced engineers in a remote-first environment that values curiosity, ownership, independent thinking, and collaboration.
We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment and welcome applications from candidates with different backgrounds and experiences.
